Disposable Cats

In St. Thomas, the lost of employment opportunities with the closure of the Ford plant and supporting industry has resulted in many people leaving to find work in other communities.

Community Approved Feral Cat

Too often, the family cat is left behind to fend for itself with as much care by the owners as that given to yesterday’s coffee cups. With more people abandoning their cats to the streets and ravines the one thing we are sure to see is those cats’ off- spring who have truly returned to their wild state.

Wild cats, also known as feral cats, provide a service to the community by reducing rodents, mice, rats, moles and so forth. They are hard to catch and impossible to handle, however ear tipping can be seen at a safe distance.

Ear tipping is reserved in our community for the feral cats only when all efforts to tame the cat has failed.

Ideally, micro-chipping each cat would help by returning the feral cats who do end up at the animal shelter back to the colonies they belong to. In fact, micro-chipping all cats would greatly increase the number of cats that are lost being returned to thier owners. By making it by-law that all cats be micro-chipped in our community would encourage responsible pet ownership.
